This Week In Small Business: Pet Supplies! - NYTimes.com

Dashboard

A weekly roundup of small-business developments.

What?s affecting me, my clients and other small-business owners this week.

The Big Story: Things Are Tough

More than a third of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, poverty is on track to be the highest since the 1960s and 75 percent of people at retirement age have accumulated less than $30,000 in savings. The global economy is reportedly in its worst shape since 2009 and the current drought here could cause global unrest. The recession claimed 170,000 small businesses in two years, and Andrew Sullivan wonders if Malcolm Gladwell caused it. A professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City who is also a senior scholar at New York?s Levy Economics Institute of Bard College says thieves have taken over the financial system. Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers feel that the economic policy debate is a sham (and one side is to blame). McDonald?s reports slower sales. Cisco cuts 1,300 jobs. This is not what Ben S. Bernanke predicted five years ago. Even Tony Robbins is feeling the heat!

The Data: The Energy Stimulus

The economy seems to be losing the momentum it had. Manufacturing activity in both the Midwest (pdf) and the Central Atlantic regions remains tepid. A widely followed index indicates the weakest improvement in manufacturing conditions in 19 months, and new home sales dropped significantly. Durable goods orders, excluding transportation and defense, are down. Rail traffic slows. But a bright spot is the energy sector which delivers an economic stimulus of almost $1 billion every day. Remodelers are forecasting a positive outlook. Other than mortgage delinquencies, Russell Investments says economic indicators are in their typical range. And the sale of pet supplies defies the economy.

Starting Up: Disruption

Alyson Shontell says these are the 11 most disruptive start-ups. Ben Horowitz explains why a tiny start-up was worth $1.26 billion. These four New York City start-ups are reshaping small business. Rieva Lesonsky writes about taking your start-up global. Lauren Drell reports on what founders wish they knew before they started. A crowd-funding company introduces a Facebook game in which real start-ups like AirBnB, Etsy, and Pinterest compete for a player?s virtual investment. Tech start-ups are making millions off the presidential campaign. A maker of workplace collaboration tools raises $28 million. Columbia University opens an entrepreneurship lab.

Management: Don?t Be Batman

Did Jack Gilchrist build this? Dave Roberts says the ?OODA Loop? helps managers make decisions and act on them using a four-stage model: observation, orientation, decision and action. Susan Payton says yoga teaches 10 things about small-business ownership. Two ways to cut costs in your business: don?t be Batman and follow Arie Hefter?s cost-cutting advice, including: ?telecommuting can be a great way to both cut costs and, for the right workers, increase efficiency overall.? Melanie Williams says there are eight signs of a cowardly leader. A consulting firm says these are 10 surefire ways to destroy your business. Here is how to find your next great business idea. Karl Stark and Bill Stewart suggest three ways to get more time. Jane Porter suggests nine routine tasks you should eliminate from your workday. Mike Michalowicz says there were five ways our colonial forebears kept stress at bay.

Your People: Say What You Pay

Experts advise that when a sexual harassment accusation flies you should investigate and discipline right away (this husband should be investigated for harassing his wife). Research shows that you should be open about what you pay your employees: ?Remember what matters to your employees isn?t that their pay be equal but that the system for awarding it seems fair.? David Beckham surprises a few fans.

Marketing: The Circles

Angely Grecia shares eight networking tips for shy business owners, including ?Stop checking your mobile every minute.? Anne-Sophie Reinhardt teaches how an introvert can survive big conferences: ?Remember the mantra: Nobody belongs here more than me.? Andy Sernovitz reveals the biggest clue that will warn you that a conference is going to be awful. Scott Steinberg offers five high tech trends for small-business marketing. The last of Brad Smith?s three easy ways to create customer loyalty is ?content marketing,? which he says is part art and part science. Sonia Simone wants you to protect your business?s greatest asset: your audience. Seth Godin explains the circles of marketing (it?s about more than just hype).

Social Media: Hard Truths

Here?s how to get Google to index your new Web site and blog quickly. Tim Berry tells Jim Blasingame how to integrate social media into a business plan. Twenty transaction marketing players are vying to create ?a synergistic mash of loyalty programs, offers, reputation management and the ?big data? sets that can analyze behavior and target specific customers.? Twitter goes down (again). Jeff Bullas shares 72 social media facts for 2012. Whitney Hoffman suggests 10 social media hard truths (it?s no longer a fad). Ashley Neal talks about going local with her small-business blogging. Small businesses are embracing F-Commerce.

Around The Country: Are Contests Worth It?

Voting ends next week for the top small-business influencers. Frontier Communications introduces a social media all-star contest for small businesses. Jason Keith wonders if small-business contests are a waste of time or worth the money. A Boston-based nonprofit is expanding its programming with a ?StreetWise MBA? course in October. A California city deals with the aftermath of bankruptcy. The heat wave takes its toll on small businesses. A new travel community helps entrepreneurs avoid expensive hotels. These 11 metropolitan areas have more than 100,000 small businesses and these cities have bigger economies than entire countries.

Around The World: China?s Perfect Storm

Economists say Europe is sleepwalking toward disaster. Germany faces its own recession. Amid the mayor?s Olympic welcome, Amazon makes a big expansion and offers a tuition benefit aimed at its lowest-paid employees (and Jeff Bezos supports gay marriage). But Britain remains in recession. China?s manufacturing contracts at a slower pace, and Steve Sherfy believes the country is undergoing a perfect storm of market growth. As costs rise in China, technology lures factories back to America. People in these countries have moved $21 trillion to offshore tax havens. A cash-strapped Argentine town pays employees by raffle. Dina Kyriakidou reports on the lessons learned by a Greek shrimp farm. A South Korean man claims his dog gave birth to a cat.

Red Tape: The Price of Reform

The Congressional Budget Office reaffirms that health care reform will reduce the deficit ? but business owners may pay $4 billion more in taxes. A Deloitte study finds that one in 10 employers plan to drop health insurance. An Internet sales tax bill picks up speed in Congress and its supporters say it?s good for consumers. Here?s a helpful guide for using the federal business opportunities Web site. And if you?re looking for a new accountant here are a few things to consider. An Internal Revenue Service watchdog concludes that small-business audits often find no more taxes due.

Technology: Wanna Hang Out?

Meghan Peters teaches how to host a Google+ hangout. Brian Lane explains how manufacturing is going mobile. ?Skimmers? used to rob automated teller machines are getting thinner. Google announces the winners of its 2012 science fair and looks for partners to help build its cloud platform. George Crump says that one way to avoid cloud outages is to consider an ?on-ramping solution.? Celebrities explain what life will be like in the future and read mean tweets about themselves. Apple releases a new operating system. Small businesses dominate the mobile app market. Ramon Ray explains what Microsoft?s purchase of Yammer means for small businesses. Microsoft?s Cindy Bates suggests three ways around tough tech challenges.

Tweets of the Week

@larrywinget: You don?t have a money problem, you have a priority problem. Get your priorities right and your money will get right.

@duncanbrodie: Things Not To Do When Managing: Assume that everyone is motivated by the same things as you

@TheEllenShow: What did the coach tell the runner who was afraid of hurdles? Get over it.

@cspenn: Remember the good old days when Twitter being down wasn?t news?

The Week?s Bests

Evangelos Simoudis says that we need to be more customer centric: ?Companies that don?t start planning on how to become customer centric and how to achieve this goal by integrating all their customer-related data and systems in order to provide a consistent and unified message across all their interaction channels will find themselves at a considerable disadvantage over the next five or so years.?

Kyle Wiens won?t hire people who use poor grammar: ?Grammar signifies more than just a person?s ability to remember high school English. I?ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing ? like stocking shelves or labeling parts. I hire people who care about those details. Applicants who don?t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other (important) things also aren?t important.?

Jon Stow is not a fan of amateurism: ?Even some businesses with Web sites don?t utilize the domain for e-mail. An example would be reallywhizzyflorists.com advertising an e-mail address such as reallywhizzyflorists@yahoo.com. It doesn?t sit right. To quote John McEnroe ?You cannot be serious.??

Jets' Revis fully practices after being limited

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:04 a.m. ET July 30, 2012

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) - New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis fully participated in practice Monday after sitting out team drills Sunday with some tightness in his right hamstring.

Revis worked with the first-team defense during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, and showed no signs of being hobbled. The All-Pro cornerback participated in only individual drills Sunday and thought he could do more, but team trainers wanted to be cautious with what was termed by coach Rex Ryan a "minor thing."

Revis originally felt the tightness during a rain-soaked practice Saturday, but it wasn't serious enough for the team to take any tests or an MRI exam on his hamstring. As he stood on the sideline during practice Sunday, there was some speculation that it could be contract-related, but Revis insisted it was not.

Graphene re-knits its holes

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Scientists at The University of Manchester and the SuperSTEM facility at STFC's Daresbury Laboratory have discovered that the 'miracle material', graphene, undergoes a self repairing process to mend holes.

This research, published in Nano Letters, could hold the key in the quest to realise graphene's huge potential for use in fields from electronics to medicine.

Graphene, which is made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick, is a promising material for a wide range of future applications due, for instance, to its exceptional electronic properties.

The team, led by Professor Kostya Novoselov, who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for exploiting the remarkable properties of graphene's, was originally looking to gain a deeper understanding into how metals interact with graphene, essential if it is to be integrated into practical electronic devices in the future.

The researchers were using a powerful electron microscope at the SuperSTEM Laboratory at Daresbury, which allows scientists to study the properties of materials one atom at a time. They recently demonstrated that metals can initiate the formation of holes in the graphene sheet, which could be hugely detrimental to the properties of any graphene-based device.

Surprise results then showed that some of the holes that had been created during this process were actually mending themselves spontaneously using nearby loose carbon atoms to re-knit the graphene structure.

Dr Quentin Ramasse, Scientific Director at SuperSTEM said: "This was a very exciting and unexpected result. The fact that graphene can heal itself under the right conditions may be the difference between a working device and a proof of concept without any real application. We may now have a way of not only drilling through graphene in a controlled fashion to sculpt it at the atomic level, but also to grow it back in new shapes. This adds a lot of flexibility to our nanotechnology toolbox and could pave the way to future technological applications."

SuperSTEM (link opens in a new window) is the EPSRC National Facility for Aberration Corrected STEM and is run by a consortium of universities, consisting of Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford. Other collaboration agreements with the external partner universities Cambridge, Sheffield, Warwick and York will be commencing shortly and the facility has received ?4.5M funding from EPSRC.

Some Reasons Why It Is Wrong For the Church to Furnish ...

By?Donald Townsley

1. It is Not the Mission of the Church to Entertain Saints or Sinners. (By ?entertainment? we mean eating together, fun and games.)

a. Jesus did not come to earth to ?seek to entertain,? but ?to seek and to save that which was lost? (Lk. 19:10).

b. The gospel is not God?s ?power to entertain,? but ?the power of God unto salvation? (Rom. 1:16).

c. The church is not the ?support of entertainment,? but the ?~Pillar and ground of the truth? (1 Tim. 3:15).

d. The mission of the church in the world is to preach the gospel to the lost (1 Tim. 3:15; Phil. 1:5; 4:14-17; Mk. 16:1516); to edify its members (Eph. 4:11-12); and to minister to its own in time of need (Acts 2:44-45; 4:32; 6:1-6; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; Rom. 15:25-27; Acts 11:27-30; 1 Tim. 5:16).

2. It is not scriptural for the church to furnish entertainment, for no Scripture authorizes it.

a. We must respect the silence of the Scriptures (1 Pet. 4:11; 2 Jn. 9-11).

b. The idea that we can do something because it is not expressly forbidden in the Scriptures creates respect for what the Bible does not say, rather than what it does say!

c. When one?s action in religion is governed on the assumption that he can do what is not expressly forbidden, the door is wide open! Through this door comes instrumental music in worship, praying through Mary, baptizing babies, ad infinitum!

d. John said, ?If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book? (Rev. 22:18).

e. Paul said ?not to think of men above that which is written? (1 Cor. 4:6).

3. Entertainment is not ?church business?; it is home or family business (the church does have business ? Acts 6:3).

a. Paul tells the Corinthians that they had houses to eat and drink in: ?What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise you not ? (1 Cor. 11: 34).

b. Disciples in Jerusalem ate at home: ?Breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart? (Acts 2:46, ASV).

c. From these passages we learn this truth: Christians have houses to eat and drink in: the social aspect of life is family business and God does not want the social business of the family mixed with the spiritual business of the church.

d. It is the social business of the home to ?wash feet? ? show hospitality (1 Tim. 5:10). We have pointed out to our Baptist friends who want to make ?foot-washing? church business, that it is not church business but the business of the home to show hospitality. ?Foot washing? is in the realm of the social and should not be mixed with the spiritual, just as entertainment is in the realm of the social and should not be mixed with the spiritual.

4. For the church to furnish entertainment is to put no difference between the holy and the common, the sacred and the secular.

a. God has always made a difference between the holy and the common. Ezekiel 22:26: ?Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things: they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them? (ASV).

b. Entertainment is not authorized in the New Testament which is sealed with the blood of Christ (Matt. 26:28; Heb. 9:23-28), therefore it is common and cannot be a part of the work or worship of the church with God?s approval. All things used in God?s service must come under the blood of Christ.

5. It leads away from spirituality by substituting ?food for the stomach? for food for the soul: music and laughter for meditation and prayer.

a. Philippians 3:19: ?Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.?

b. The kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom, not carnal in nature, and does not appeal to the fleshly appetite (Rom. 14:17; Jn. 18:36).

6. The Bible term ?fellowship? is never used in reference to entertainment.

a. The Bible does not teach just any kind of ?fellowship?: the term is limited to what the Bible teaches about it.

b. Bible fellowship is based upon gospel teaching (1 Jn. 1:3-4,7).

c. It is fellowship men enjoy with one another and with God because Jesus died, and which would have been impossible without his death. Jesus did not die to bring men and women together to drink coffee and eat doughnuts (or hamburgers)!

d. Jesus? death brings men and women together in fellowship in song (Eph. 5:19); in fellowship in prayer (Acts 2:42); in fellowship in the support of gospel preachers (Phil. 1:5; 4:14-17); in fellowship in suffering for the cause of Christ (Phil. 3:10); in fellowship in the harmony that exists among members of the church one with another (1 Cor. 12:1827); in fellowship with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit (1 Jn. 1:3,7; Phil. 2:1), and in fellowship of the ministering to the saints in need (2 Cor. 8:4; 9:13; Rom. 15:26).

7. Church-furnished entertainment is denominational in origin, and has not added to their (the denomination?s) growth.

a. The following is from an article by Connie W. Adams in which he quotes from a Baptist paper published in Florida: ?Not in sixteen years have the number of baptisms in Texas sunk to such a low. There are 4,000 Baptist churches in the great state of Texas. Last year these 4,000 churches baptized 53,956. This was the lowest number since 1949. This was less than 14 baptisms for each church. . . It take(s) one Texas Baptist 12,045 days to win one soul.? ?The secret of soul-winning is following Jesus. Maybe it would not be out of order for Texas Baptists ? along with all Southern Baptists ? to stop cooking in our church kitchens; stop playing in our athletic buildings; and call for an oldfashioned prayer meeting . . . Get back to God; back to the Bible. On fire with . . . real love in our hearts for lost souls. Maybe this is the answer.?

b. A church that furnishes entertainment cannot claim to be undenominational in practice when it does that which is denominational in origin.

8. Church-furnished entertainment was opposed by gospel preachers in terms nobody misunderstood forty years ago.

B.C. Goospasture, in an editorial in the Gospel Advocate (May 20, 1948) said, ?It is not the mission of the church to furnish amusement for the world or even for its own members.? ?The church would come off a poor second if it undertook to compete with institutions established for the express purpose of entertaining people.? ?Only as the church becomes worldly, as it pillows its head on the lap of Delilah, will it want to turn from its wonted course to relatively unimportant matters.?

Pets and More Pets ? Everything You Need To Know About Dog ...

There are a number of reasons for having a pet dog. Perhaps, it was that irresistible puppy or the dog with lovable eyes! Needless to say, an obedient one is ideal. That takes training to accomplish! This article will provide some helpful ideas for doing just that!

Always remember that it takes time and patience to train a dog. Some dogs pick up things quickly, while others take longer. Each individual dog will have their own learning pace, so be sure to be aware of what your dog?s pace is. Try to be as positive as possible when working with him so that he thinks it is a fun activity to do with you and will look forward to your training sessions.

An important key to effective dog training is to always enforce the first command that you give to your dog. It is a mistake to keep repeating the command over and over again. The dog needs to learn that a command requires instant obedience. Do not give the dog the opportunity to disobey. Enforce the first command, and then promptly give a reward and praise.

Try making sure they have some activity by taking them for long walks, or if you must stay home, a long game of fetch. Your dog will be too tired out to bother digging.

If possible, position your dog?s crate next to your bed. This is a critical step in teaching him that is where you want him to sleep. Since you are still within sight he isn?t as likely to panic about having to stay in the crate for an extended period of time.

Use your pet?s name often to reinforce familiarity. It is important that your dog knows its name well, so that you can gain their attention at a moment?s notice. Reinforce their name as a positive experience using it when calling for food, treats, walks, or any activity your dog enjoys. Refrain from using their name when you are angry, or they could learn to fear it.

Training a dog is easier if the pet is neutered or spayed. Unless you are breeding the animal, taking the hormones out of the equation will greatly calm your pet. Without the constant rush of hormones, a dog is much more docile and receptive to a leader. This will also help control the pet population which is a win-win situation.

The diet you are feeding your dog needs to match their needs and activity level. The diet that is right for a working dog is a lot different from that of a dog that lounges around the house all day. Talk with your vet regarding what is right for your pup and don?t forget their needs will change as they age.

As was discussed in the beginning of this article, puppy chewing is a problem only if you do not give him something else to focus on. Apply the advice from this article on the proper way to train your puppy not to chew up your home, and soon you will see your dog finding non-destructive ways to occupy his or her time.

A Christian Science perspective.

By Doug Brown / July 29, 2012

Over the years I have always had a fascination with fairy tales. They contain wonderful insights that we carry well into adulthood; and many times, universal truths are taught by the animal characters in these fairy tales.

I particularly like ?The Ugly Duckling,? by Hans Christian Andersen. Our star character is a duckling whose appearance is so out of place among his family that he is labeled The Ugly One. Deep down in his little duckling heart he has the same needs for love and acceptance as his brother and sister ducks, but it is not to be. He is different ? he is ugly.

One day he sees a flock of beautiful white birds on a pond. Something deep inside impels him to approach these birds, these beautiful white swans. As he approaches, he catches sight of his reflection in the water ? why, he is one of them! He is a beautiful white swan. Everyone had it wrong: he was not a duck, nor was he ugly. It was a case of mistaken identity.

Over 2,000 years ago Jesus asked a question along similar lines, which continues to reverberate even today. The question was asked in two different ways. First, ?Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?? His disciples? answer was to report rumors of what others said. He asked again: ?But whom say ye that I am?? This time his disciple Peter came forth with a validation of Jesus? office: ?Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God? (Matthew 16:13-16).

The integrity of any testimony is based on two factors: the credibility of the testimony and the credentials of the witness. Peter?s understanding was the rock upon which Jesus would build his church, and it satisfies both criteria as reliable and authentic.

Sadly, Jesus? best intentions were misinterpreted and even intentionally distorted. Yet he never forgot his mission, never turned back or compromised his message. The biographies of Mary Baker Eddy reveal a similar kind of resistance to her message, but her teachings and practice followed the Master ? always taking the way of divine Love to bless, restore, and reform. She was not deterred when her efforts were misrepresented by mere opinion gone wrong; she knew that conviction based on truth would vindicate the Christianity of her teachings.

We shouldn?t be discouraged if our prayers or our healing work is misrepresented; rather, we should recognize that opinion is baseless, but conviction blesses. What matters is our commitment to reflecting God?s allness in our daily living. Jesus exhorted his students: ?Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils? (Matthew 10:8). And Mrs. Eddy placed a similarly high premium on proof and demonstration. She encouraged her students to rely totally upon those principles in their lives. She wrote, ?I make strong demands on love, call for active witnesses to prove it, and noble sacrifices and grand achievements as its results? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 250).

Christian Science teaches us of our inseparability from God, divine Mind, our origin and the source of our completeness. Mrs. Eddy writes, ?Man is God?s reflection, needing no cultivation, but ever beautiful and complete? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 527).

When the duckling made the connection with the other swans through his reflection, it allowed him to cross over the invisible barrier to the companionship he so longed for. And when we make the connection to the divinity in our reflection, we cross the invisible barriers to what we long for. It is this decision to take action, directed by inspiration, that validates and sustains our course heavenward.

Man shoots his two kids, one fatally, kills himself

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) ? A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.

A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.

Benway's 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway's condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment.

Benway's wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children's hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband.

Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway's brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said.

Early said he couldn't speculate on a motive. He said the Benways separated weeks ago but were still married.

No restraining orders had been filed against Daryl Benway, and he had no criminal record, the DA said. He had a gun license that expired in 1999, Early said.

On Daryl Benway's Facebook page, his profile picture posted in December showed him with his family in front of a Christmas tree. He described the woman next to him as "my Beautiful wife Kelleen." Owen stood in front of him in a white dress shirt and red plaid tie, while brown-haired Abigail wore a black and white dress with a black hair bow.

Daryl Benway listed his place of employment as TJX Cos., which operates discount retailers TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, as well as Ross Stores Inc.

    London protesters decry 'corporate Olympics'

    Jim Seida / NBC News

Protesters pass a surface-to-air missile site atop a water tower on a residential block in Bow Quarter, London, Saturday. This is one of six missile sites installed around London in case of a 9/11-style attack during the Olympic Games.

By Alastair Jamieson and Jim Seida, NBC News

LONDON -- Hours after the opening ceremony fireworks echoed around east London, up to 400 demonstrators marched through a neighborhood near the Olympic Park to?protest?what they called the "Corporate Olympics."

The event, organized by Counter-Olympic Network and supported by 35 groups ranging from Occupy London to ecological and local anti-austerity campaigners,?targeted issues including free tickets for sponsors, missile sites on residential blocks and the ethics of Olympic corporations such as BP and Dow Chemicals.

?A significant number of people in this country?-- about 20 percent, according to a poll -- are not happy with the Olympics because of the involvement of large corporations about which are significant concerns,? said Julian Cheyne of the Counter-Olympic Network. ?We are representing their views and making sure that opinion is expressed.

    Jim Seida / NBC News

Protester Dana Wojokh from New Jersey was in east London on Saturday protesting the plight of Circassians in Russia.

?It is shameful that BP is a sustainability partner of the Olympics after the damage it did to the Gulf coast with their spill, and Dow Chemicals are not meeting their moral and ethical obligations to help the victims of the Bhopal disaster.?

London cyclists say 'green' Games boast 'a bit of a joke'

The Saturday lunchtime event passed?without incident, in contrast to Friday night?s Critical Mass protest ?- against the temporary closure of cycle lanes to make way for VIP Games traffic -- that saw 130 arrests.

It coincided with a visit by the Queen to the athletes' village and the swimming arena, and came only 12 hours after the spectacular opening ceremony watched by billions across the world. The protest was significantly smaller than organizers' original estimates of up to 5,000, and at one stage was almost outnumbered by news reporters and camera crews.

Protesters, flanked by large numbers of police motorbikes, began in Mile End and went past the Bow Quarter apartment building whose roof tower is one of six sites around London where the military have installed Rapier missile launchers as part of London?s $877 million security operation protecting the Games.

?This is the heaviest militarization of London since the Second World War,??Cheyne said.

One protest banner read: ?International games OK. No to Corporate backed destruction of people?s homes, green space, livelihoods, human rights.?

    Jim Seida / NBC News

A crush of media surrounds a supporter of the Olympics during an anti-Olympic protest march Saturday in east London.

As protesters shouted slogans outside Bow Quarter, soldiers guarding the missile launcher stared back from their temporary lookout position at the top of the tower.

As it went along Bow Road, the march was blocked by a small group of local residents who brandished an Olympic flag and chanted back: ?Up the Olympics!?

Diane Grieves, who lives on the street, said: ?I?m delighted about the Olympics?-- it?s really helped the area and brought everyone together. If there weren?t corporate sponsors then the Olympics would be even more expensive for taxpayers.?

Protester George Barda shouted ?No to the corporate Olympics? while wearing a T-shirt highlighting the victims of the 1984 disaster at Bhopal chemical plant of the Union Carbide Company, which merged with Olympic sponsor Dow Chemicals in 2001.

He was also wearing a pair of shoes and a backpack from Olympic sponsors Adidas.

Click for more from the 2012 summer games in London.

?I?m just wearing these shoes out because I have nothing else left,? he explained to NBCNews.com. ?I know I?m part of the problem for buying the products but the bigger issue here, which is much more important, is that the Olympics has been taken over by unethical corporate sponsors despite the fact that they only contribute five per cent of the cost of the Games.?

Among the others taking part was Dana Wojokh, from?New Jersey, who was highlighting the plight of Circassians -- a Caucasian and Middle-Eastern mountain tribe that was the victim of genocide by imperial Russia at the end of the 19th century centered on Sochi, where Russia intends to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

?This is our chance to tell the world what happened to Circassians?-- oppression that is still happening, for example in Syria,? she said.

    /

A diverse community in East London will welcome the world to Britain for the 2012 Olympic Games. Meet residents and hear how they feel about having a huge, world stage in their backyard.

A spokesman for the?London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games told BBC News: ?The Olympic Games is the biggest event in the world, and big events have always been a magnet for protests of all shapes and sizes; we have planned for this.

"We implore any protesters to consider the impact of any action on the athletes, most of whom have spent half their lives preparing for London 2012.

"We are a sport-loving nation, and ruining sporting events is not the way anyone wants London 2012 to be remembered."

Ah, Sweet Childhood Memories for Baby Boomer Grandparents ...

    By: ?Karla Sullivan

    ?

(Editor?s Note: ?Next time your grandchildren tell you they are bored?share this story with them.)

As storms approached for a long weekend of indoor play, you called your neighborhood friends to come over using the single household phone; some families had two. If the line was busy, you could be delayed since call waiting and voicemail were not a luxury. You had to wait or walk. If your telephone line was a party line, you could amuse yourself by listening to stranger conversations but watch out if your Mom or Dad caught you. Imagine that, party lines, of all things, a great option for identity theft. But the best solution to your communication dilemma was to have previously designed the old can and string phone. If your friend lived close and the string was taut, it had better reception than some of the cell phones today.

Once the troops gathered and if you had a basement, you could play Blind Man?s Bluff where you turned down the lights, blindfolded the selected member and the one who was it, chased everyone around the room. But this game was more fun with a lot of people and so was Cowboys and Indians.

Twister came into fashion in later years and is still a big hit at slumber parties. If a girls? home had a blackboard, playing teacher was always a choice. Younger girls played in their cardboard or metal kitchens making plastic food entrees while ironing with their fake iron and ironing board; we wanted to be just like Mom.

If you were older and competitive, you could play your pinball machine or ping pong if you were lucky to own these. If you didn?t have a basement but a garage, it was a great time to be creative and pull all the garbage left overs from Dad?s workshop. Build the neighborhood scooter that was shared by all or the clubhouse you always wanted.

If space was an issue, then it was time to pull out the trusted board game collection which could take an hour of argument to decide which one you wanted to play. Monopoly and Life could be the most time-consuming while Yahtzee, Clue and Sorry were less complicated and available today for the computer generation. Of course, let?s not forget Probe and Scrabble if you wanted to really show off your intelligence and Operation if you were planning on being a doctor, had a steady hand or just liked to watch the patient?s nose light up while buzzing.

Scrabble has a computer version and if you are still a Scrabble guru, you can actually become a member of the National Scrabble Association that was established in 1978.

As a younger child, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders made a stormy Saturday more appealing; we all wanted to fantasize about hillsides filled with chocolate and being rewarded for our good deeds. If you were a young card shark, then it was Old Maid or Go Fish. Returning champions played Poker, Canasta, Gin Rummy and Pinochle.

If all else failed and the one family TV was available, you could select from 3- 5 channels. If it was Saturday morning, you had a variety of cartoons to choose but Saturday afternoons could be tricky and forget Sunday until noon which was dedicated programming to religious events. Prime television was generally in the evening and reserved as a family event?after your friends returned home. But Saturday afternoons could offer corny black and white horror movies such as Attack of The Crab Monsters, Teenagers From Outer Space and I Was A Teenage Werewolf. After adjusting the TV antennas or better known as rabbit ears which could take some time especially if weather was poor and Mom watching over you while you made Jiffy Pop. Ultimately, this was the best stove- top popcorn that you loved to gently slide back and forth over the burner and watch the foil expand to new heights. Finally, you were ready to settle in the den or front room with your favorite group. Jiffy Pop can still be purchased in cases so you will never run out.

Ah, the good old days; sitting, talking and laughing with friends that you could share, hug or punch while sitting in the same room; so much better than texting all weekend long.

World Champion Craig Alexander talks about ... - Tri Fatherhood

    Dear Izzy, Max, and Kate,

I want to introduce you to some awesome Moms and Dads as I write these letters to you. I?m doing my best to balance being a husband to your mom, a good dad to you kids, and an athlete, but there are some amazing people in the world who are doing these things too. I think it?s important for you to meet them.

    ?

Craig ?Crowie? Alexander is the current Ironman World Champion. He is a 5 time world champion, including three victories at Ironman Hawaii.

In 2011 he did what no other triathlete in history had done. He won both the 70.3 World Championship and Ironman Hawaii in the same year, just a few weeks apart. His victory last year at Ironman Hawaii may have been the most impressive of his 3 victories in Hawaii. He became the oldest man to ever win the race at the age of 38. He also broke the course record.

Not bad for an ?old guy? with a wife and two kids.

There are a lot of great people in the triathlon, but ?Crowie? is universally regarded as one of the most humble and accessible athletes in the sport. He?s a regular guy who just happens to be one of the greatest athletes in the world. Perhaps it?s just his laid-back Australian vibe, or maybe it?s because his life is rooted in something greater than his results as an athlete.

On his website Crowie says that of all of the titles he has won over the years, ?Daddy? is the title he is most proud of. I wanted to find out how he excels at triathlon, while also balancing family life and marriage.

I had a chance to talk with Crowie recently about balance and a little bit about triathlon.

    *****

Chad: You and Nerida have been together for 17 years. What?s the secret to you marriage?s success?

Crowie: No secret. All marriages are take give and take. We have been together for a long time now and we still like each other. That?s a good thing.

Chad: The huge time commitment it takes to compete in triathlon is a source of stress for a lot of couples. Do you have any advice on how to balance all of the demands of the sport with a commitment to your family?

    ?

Crowie: I?m lucky in that Neri is completely on board. We certainly have days when it takes it?s toll, but it is a team effort and that?s how we like it. To be successful I need Neri and the kids on my team.

    ?

Chad: My wife Karen occasionally has to put triathlon in perspective for me in the big picture. How does Neri make you a better athlete and person?

    ?

Crowie: I think she is my voice of reason. She is happy to remind me that triathlon is what I do and not who I am. That certainly helps to keep it in true perspective.

Chad: I read an interview with you and Neri recently in which Neri said that you two never fight about money, because of the way you lived in the beginning. Can you tell us what those early years of your marriage were like?

Crowie: Neri ( and my parents) were my first sponsors. She supported me for a long time working night shift and double shifts many many times to help me front up to my next race.?We lived in a tiny apartment and we were happy doing what we were doing. ?We are well supported now by the sport and our sponsors and for that I am grateful.

Chad: Tell us about your kids Lucy and Austin?

    ?

Crowie: Lucy is 7 and Austin is 3. Lucy will be an athlete of some kind one day. She is thin and athletic and pretty driven. She currently plays soccer, does gymnastics and swim squad. She also is a great little hiker, and has done a bunch of kids triathlons. Aussie is much more laid back. He is more of a ball sports guy, but has recently discovered that he can ride a 2 wheel bike and is a maniac on it ! No fear !

Chad: My daughter Izzy did her first race last summer. I remember it being a great day, but also emotional for me. Lucy did her first triathlon recently. What was that like for your family?

    ?

Crowie: Lucy has done a bunch of races and probably knows more about triathlon than a large percentage of the population. She has lived and breathed it for 7 years. She was nervous for her first race, but nailed it. She has practiced post race interviews since she was about 3. Welchy gave her that opportunity post the Kona dip?n?dash last year, and the cat got her tongue.

Chad: Between travel, training, and a growing family you?ve had to become a master of time management. How do you make it all work?

    ?

Crowie: I have Neri and Neri has a schedule.

Chad: How often do Neri, Lucy, and Austin travel with you to races?

    ?

Crowie: Neri and the kids really only come to a handful of races each year now. It is logistically much harder with the family and the costs crazy to fly the family everywhere. On top of that, Lucy is home schooled when we are in Boulder so she and Neri really need to stay at home and keep that on track. Missing so much time in the class room in Australia, it takes a lot of dedication to be disciplined enough to maintain the level she should be at. Not to say that traveling and experiencing things around the world is not an education as it most definitely is.

Chad: Is that stressful or do you have it figured out?

    ?

Crowie: Neri seems to have it on track. We have good support from her school in Australia and we have a great tutor in Boulder who helps Neri out a lot.

    ?

Chad: You had some health issues awhile back. What did you learn from all of that?

    ?

    Crowie: Be patient.

Chad: You?re racing both 70.3 Worlds and Kona again this year, after winning the double last year. Why is it important for you to do well in both?

    ?

Crowie: I race for my living and to support my family, because I love it and I always want to do my best. My aim would be to defend both titles. Can that be done? We?ll all know in October.

Chad: What?s Kona week like for you from a family perspective?

    ?

Crowie: I try to shut down shop in that final week and spend a bit of time with the kids as the taper kicks in. It always ends up being way crazier than I hope for, and from the families perspective we all can?t wait until race day arrives.

Chad: What do you hope your kids remember about this period of their life ? they?re dad being the world champion?

    ?

Crowie: That I trained hard and I always did my best. My message to the kids is it is not about winning, but about doing your best. Taking winning out of the equation is hard for Lucy though. She is super competitive!

Chad: What life lessons do you hope they take away from your career as a professional triathlete?

    ?

Crowie: That hard work pays off. There is personal satisfaction in doing your best.

Chad: Final word of advice for age-groupers who are juggling family, triathlon, and full time jobs. How can we excel in the sport without taking away from the most important area in our lives (our families)?

Crowie: I would offer my congratulations to any age grouper who manages to train for triathlon and work and have a family. The pro athletes have it easy in that it IS their job.

Keeping your partner on side is a big thing, I find ?destination? races are a good incentive to keep them on side! Keeping the family involved is also a smart move. My kids love nothing better than handing me drinks out the window of the car on a long run or coming in the stroller when I head out for a recovery run. Lucy can ride well enough and long enough now that she can accompany me on a 1 hour run. It?s fun for both of us.
