SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico ? ?Police in Puerto Rico say a 27-year-old woman is suspected of killing her boyfriend after he became upset about her activities on Facebook.
Lt. Candido Pagan says there were two children in the house when the killing occurred Saturday morning: a nearly 2-month-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. Pagan says both belonged to suspect Wilnilia Sanchez Falcon, but it's unclear if they witnessed the killing in the central mountain town of Comerio.
Pagan says Sanchez is expected to be charged in the death of 25-year-old Jesus Rivera Algarin, who was stabbed in the torso. The lieutenant provided no information about what Sanchez may have posted on her Facebook account to upset Rivera.
He says Sanchez didn't have a criminal history but Rivera was charged with domestic violence in 2010.

I've been a long-distance grandma from the moment I became a grandma at all. So I have no idea what it's like to have my grandsons nearby. I know only what it's like to have them living more than 800 miles away, to miss them far more often than not.
I do know, though, that it's getting easier to be a long-distance grandma. Partially because I've just accepted that my daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons won't be moving any closer any time soon, if ever. More so, though, it's because my oldest grandson is getting older, and my youngest grandson is not far behind him.
With no more baby grandchildren right now, I do miss the idea of not having a little baby to hold in my arms. Thing is, with the distance between us, it always was more of exactly that?an idea, for the reality was that I was able to hold my grandbabies in my arms so rarely.
Now that my grandsons are getting older, though, my long-distance grandparenting is getting easier, for several reasons.
Older grandkids ... remember you. With the little ones, the first few minutes of contact, whether on the phone, Skype, or in person, are spent saying, "Hey, baby! It's Gramma! Remember Gramma?!" That's no longer required, thankfully. They remember me.
Older grandkids ... pay attention and actually converse with you. On Skype, via FaceTime (if you're fortunate enough to have it), and in person (when you're really fortunate). At least for a few minutes.
Older grandkids ... get it?and appreciate it, look forward to it?when you send them letters, packages, cards, mail of any sort.
Older grandkids ... can and often do send mail back.
Older grandkids ... can say, "Mom I want to talk to Gramma" when you're on the phone with their mother. And when handed the phone, they talk, not just press buttons and unintentionally hang up on you.
Older grandkids ... will eventually have their own phone to call Gramma unassisted by Mom or Dad.
Older grandkids ... also will eventually?sooner than I think, I'm sure?be able to travel unaccompanied for special solo stays at Gramma's. (If, that is, Gramma and Mommy are brave enough to allow such unaccompanied travel.)
Older grandkids ... hug you back. Reciprocal hugs last far longer in one's memory than one-sided hugs. In Gramma's memory and in theirs.
I remember cradling my grandsons in my arms when they were babies, rocking them and snuggling their delicious little heads into my neck as I held their blanket-bundled bodies close to my heart. I delighted in that when I had the honor of being with them, missed it beyond compare when without them.
Those moments of physically holding my baby grandsons close to my heart were too few and too far between. Now that they're older, the physical moments together are still too few and too far between, yet the non-physical methods of holding my big-boy grandsons close to my heart?and me to theirs?are, thankfully, increasing.
Which makes this long-distance grandparenting gig a wee bit easier to bear. It may not be my preferred grandparenting scenario, to be sure, but it works. For me. For us. For now.

What delights you about the kids you love getting older?

Network marketing is not brain surgery; it just takes a little time to learn the basics. This article presents tips on how to get further in your network marketing campaign.
The financial experts agree that the calculation you should be using is your monthly spending times nine, the total being what you need to have on hand in case of emergency. Network marketing can give you that money and much more!
Make sure meetings are less than an hour. If you speak with a client for more than an hour, they may not want to work with you for fear that the business will take too much effort and time.
It is completely natural for people to like talking about themselves and what they want. Use this human trait to your advantage, and let people go on and on about themselves. While doing this, avoid saying too much about your own life. You want to come across as trustworthy, so let your customers feel like they are in control.
Making sure you put your customers first is a must in network marketing. Without it you?re nothing; the customers are what make you successful. Your business will tank if your customers aren?t happy. Set a goal to listen for at least 80% of the conversation and talk the other 20% of the time.
If you want to be professional as a business owner, take the time each day when you get out of bed to shower, fix your hair and apply makeup if you wear it. It is easy to work and act professionally if you are dressed for the part; this also allows you to quickly leave for a business meeting if needed.
When talking to a client about your network marketing project, make them believe that you are only there to help them. Tailor your presentation so that it?s only about them, making them money, making their life better, and alleviating their worries.
If you want to be successful at network marketing, consider participating in relevant online communities. These forums can provide valuable tips and information on network marketing, and as a bonus, they are free. Use an online search engine to discover forums about network marketing, and post in them every day to get as many tips as you can.
Continue using successful strategies and weed out the programs that aren?t working. Get advice from professional marketers. Try to establish the same business approach and mindset that led to their success. Copying them will assist you in finding your spot at the very top. Of course, you know to learn from your mistakes, but also try to emulate other people?s successes.
Outsourcing can be a great way to get all of your company?s network marketing done. Particularly if you do not have enough resources to invest in this form of advertising, an outsource company can be very beneficial. When you outsource the work, you have time for more pressing matters and get a fast turn around from the advertiser.
Do not take any shortcuts when using a network marketing approach, since this can hurt you in the long run. Even though you could be tempted to take shortcuts, the way to truly being successful with a network marketing campaign is to put in the proper time and effort into it. When you produce solid work, the payoff is inevitable.
Short term goals should be the building blocks to long-term success. You will probably have a long-range goal in mind for your business, perhaps three or five years out. However, with smaller goals as your focus immediately, you can build a foundation for these larger goals. This will assist you in tweaking your marketing methods so you can stay on track with your overall marketing plan.
One way to progress in your field is to learn as much as possible from your failures. Analyze what you did wrong and take measures not to repeat these mistakes. By looking at your failures, you are able to eliminate strategies that do not work and concentrate even harder on the things that do.
Invite your down line to engage in conversation and activity. Is it possible they?re shy? Could they be having an issue with the product or in their personal life? Create an open line of communication with your downline and make sure they know that they can ask you questions and interact with other network members. When everyone is participating, your team will work the best.
When you meet someone new, find out who is in their circle of friends and acquaintances. Ensure your audience will tell other people about your products, and make them eager to do so. The only time it is acceptable to spend your time discussing business with a person who has no desire to buy is if that person happens to have an impressive network of contacts.
The preceding tips should have given you the confidence you need to get out there and start prospecting. Always bear in mind that network marketing will never be fully learned overnight. It is a field where the more you know, the more successful you will be and that takes time.

Interior designers often are surprised that few homeowners actually paint their walls or hang art on them.
While choosing art is a highly subjective ? and sometimes intimidating ? process, you can find inspiration on websites, at galleries or art festivals and in objects that you encounter every day.
Here are a few tips for using art in your home.

Don?t be afraid of large art, even in small spaces. Many times, one great piece can really fill up a space nicely. In the model home photo above, the large piece of art on the right is almost the same width as the sofa and takes up most of the wall, helping fill in the room. Look for large canvas pieces for art that is larger than 30 inches wide to help cut down on the weight of the piece and make it much easier to hang.

Still nervous about large art? Can?t decide on one piece to showcase? Try using smaller pieces in a big way to create a wall collage. Even though you?re using a few pieces of art, it will read like one piece. This is great for art that is between 8 and 30 inches wide. Use an odd number of pieces and hang the set behind a sofa, above a console table or buffet or even over your bed. Incorporate a variety of textures?? art on canvas, framed art, colored glass and even mirrors ? to brighten the space. If you have art smaller than 8 inches wide, frame it in a wide frame or 3- to 4-inch mat to make it appear larger.

Any framed art or photo that is smaller than 8 inches wide should not be hung on a wall. Instead, use these pieces on any shelf?? mantle, bookshelf, buffet or nightstand.
Hang art so that the middle of the piece (or collage) is approximately 5 feet from the floor. Hanging art on a wall with wainscoting may require it to be a little higher, but try to stay within that range. When hanging a large piece of art behind a sofa, hang it high enough for heads to clear once people are seated.
Don?t be afraid of art; it can really help you bring life to your space ? for living and for staging.

I jumped on Google, found that Richer Sounds have a Sharp 32inch TV for under ?190...bargain i thought.
So....
I got to Richer Sounds, asked if i could buy it.
The manager looked/sounded surprised, then his exact words "Are you sure? I wouldnt go anywhere near it."
I thought this his just his spiel to get me to go for a more expensive TV, so i told him it wasnt for any intensive games or sport or anything just for the soaps for my mum. So he said we have a much better model for ?220, i said she just wants the cheapest but in a brand name.
He said well it flickers and the TV is awful, you can have it if you want but we cant accept it back if you decide you dont like it.
I asked if i could see it, his reponse was no because it would then be sold open boxed.
i admit its probably not a huge loss to them, a ?200 sale with probably very minimal profit but its a sale none the less.
Now im in 2 minds, is this a very daft sales approach OR is it very clever as in future i will trust their opinion?

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two loud explosions targeted one of Syria's top military command buildings in the capital Damascus on Wednesday, engulfing the building in flames, residents and state-television said.
They said the explosions struck the General Staff Command Building (Hay'at al Arkan) in the Umayad Square in central Damascus, which is one of the top military headquarters in the country.
There was no immediate word on casualties but ambulances could be heard racing to the sealed-off area.
The Syrian information minister said the attack had caused "only material damage" and that security forces were chasing "armed terrorists" - a term the authorities use to refer to insurgents waging a violent uprising to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Gunfire and other smaller blasts could be heard after the explosions, as well as the sound of ambulance sirens. Many roads in the center of the capital were blocked, residents said.
The explosions were heard around 7.00 am (11.45 p.m. EDT on Tuesday), before regular working hours start in Syria.
"The explosions were very loud. They shook the whole city and the windows of our house were shuddering," one resident reached by telephone said.
"Black smoke was seen rising from the area near the army staff building," the resident, who declined to be named, said.
A Damascus bomb attack on July 18 killed several top security officials, including Assad's brother-in-law, the defense and interior ministers. That attack paved the way for a rebel advance into the center of the capital, although they have since been pushed back to the outskirts.
MAJOR STRIKE?
Another resident said: "I was woken up at four minutes to seven by the first loud explosion. Five or six minutes later there was a second."
"We're used to the sound of artillery but these were very big - bigger than usual. I can hear gunfire still," he said, speaking an hour and a half after the blasts.
He said one of the blasts appeared to have been in the area of the General Staff Command.
He said he could see soldiers stationed on the roof of the nearby Air Force Intelligence building.
Syria's conflict, once a peaceful protest movement, has evolved into a civil war that the U.N. special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said was "extremely bad and getting worse." He said the stalemate in the country could soon "find an opening", without elaborating.
Even Damascus has become a battleground between Assad's forces and opposition fighters.
Activists say more than 27,000 people have been killed in the 18-month-old uprising against Assad.
With no foreseeable prospect of foreign intervention and diplomacy stuck, outgunned rebels have relied increasingly on attacks with homemade bombs, striving to level the playing field against a state using fighter jets, artillery and tanks.
At the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York, French President Francois Hollande sought to shake up international inertia over Syria's crisis by calling for U.N. protection of rebel-held areas to help end Syria's bloodshed and rights.
"The Syrian regime ... has no future among us," Hollande said in a speech. "Without any delay, I call upon the United Nations to provide immediately to the Syrian people all the support it asks of us and to protect liberated zones."
PROTECTION ZONES
Protection for "liberated" areas would require no-fly zones enforced by foreign aircraft, which could stop deadly air raids by Assad's forces on populated areas. But there is little chance of securing a Security Council mandate for such action given the continuing opposition of veto-wielding members Russia and China.
The United States, European allies, Turkey and Gulf Arab states have sided with the Syrian opposition while Iran, Russia and China have backed Assad, whose family and minority Alawite sect have dominated the major Arab state for 42 years.
But Western powers have shied away from supplying military aid to the rebels to an extent that could turn the tide of the conflict, in part out of fear of arming Islamist militants who have joined the anti-Assad revolt.
In another speech to the General Assembly, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said Arab nations should intervene in Syria given the Security Council's failure to stop the civil war.
Qatar, which backs the rebels, called on big powers to prepare a "Plan B" within weeks and set up a no-fly zone to provide a safe haven inside Syria in case international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi fails to make headway.
The Qatari emir said he believed Arab and European countries would be ready to take part, despite their public wariness of committing the forces needed for such a mission.
Addressing the General Assembly, U.S. President Barack Obama accused Iran of helping keep a dictatorship in power in Syria.
"Just as it restricts the rights of its own people, the Iranian government props up a dictator in Damascus and supports terrorist groups abroad," Obama said in a reference to Assad.
"We again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop, and a new dawn can begin."
The British-based charity Save the Children released a harrowing report about abuse of Syrian refugee children.
Khalid, 15, said he was hung by his arms from the ceiling of his own school building and beaten senseless. Wael said he saw a 6-year-old starved and beaten to death, "tortured more than anyone else in the room.
U.N. investigators say Syrian government forces have committed human rights violations "on an alarming scale", but have also listed multiple killings and kidnappings by armed rebels trying to oust Assad after 12 years in power.
The children that Save the Children spoke to in refugee camps in neighboring countries said they had witnessed massacres and seen family members killed during the conflict.
Humanitarian conditions are worsening as the violence drags on. The president of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which has been the only relief group on the ground the entire 18 months of conflict, said it was in dire need of supplies.
"We need to concentrate mostly on health and shelter because there are 1.5 million displaced people," Abdul Rahman Attar told Reuters during a visit to Oslo. "We need more of everything."

WASHINGTON--(ENEWSPF)--September 25, 2012. ?The American Civil Liberties Union and the Public Patent Foundation today asked the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate patents for two genes associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer that allow a Utah company to control access to crucial genetic tests that could lead to life-saving treatment.
A federal district court previously had invalidated all of the challenged patents. In August, a federal appeals court ruled for the second time that companies can obtain patents on the genes. Its 2-1 ruling followed a Supreme Court order directing the appeals court to reconsider its initial decision in light of a related patent case decided by the court last spring.
The lawsuit against Myriad Genetics and the University of Utah Research Foundation, which hold the patents on the genes, charges that the challenged patents are illegal and restrict both scientific research and patients? access to medical care. Under well-established law, patents cannot be obtained on either ?laws of nature? or ?products of nature.? For example, neither the law of gravity nor minerals, like iron, can be patented. The lawsuit contends that patents on human genes violate this core principle of patent law and the Constitution.
?In our view, the court of appeals did not fully consider or correctly apply the Supreme Court?s most recent and relevant patent law decisions, said Chris Hansen, staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. ?DNA occurs naturally in the human body and cannot be patented by a single company that can then use its patents to limit scientific research and the free exchange of ideas.?
The patents granted to Myriad give the company the exclusive right to perform tests on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and thus to control the diagnostic care provided to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer patients and people at high risk for these diseases. Myriad's monopoly on the BRCA genes allows it to set the terms and cost of testing and makes it impossible for women to access tests that provide more comprehensive information about their genes or get a second opinion about their results. It also allows Myriad to prevent researchers from even looking at the genes without first getting permission from Myriad.
?Our genes were given to us by our creator, and not inventions created by Myriad,? said Daniel B. Ravicher, executive director of PUBPAT and co-counsel in the lawsuit. ?The patenting of human genes, even in isolated form, has the effect of giving ownership over human genes to corporations, allowing them to decide who is allowed to know what they have inside their own body.?
The restrictions on examining the BRCA genes can have devastating results. Kathleen Maxian of Buffalo, N.Y. is suffering from late-stage ovarian cancer that she believes could have been prevented. Her sister, who is a breastcancer survivor, obtained a test from Myriad that did not look for all known genetic mutations associated with cancer and was told she was negative for mutations. Years later, her sister learned through a more comprehensive set of tests that she did, in fact, have a BRCA genetic mutation -- information that Maxian could have relied on to seek preventive surgery. Numerous labs across the country have stated they are capable of providing this comprehensive screening and would do so were it not for the patents.
?We are asking the Supreme Court to rule in favor of women who are counting on access to the best possible medical care and research,? said Sandra Park, staff attorney with the ACLU Women?s Rights Project. ?No single company should be able to stop the brightest scientific minds from advancing what we know about two genes that are connected to devastating diseases.?
Lisbeth Ceriani, a breast cancer survivor and plaintiff in the case, was faced with having to pay $4,000 for Myriad?s test to determine if she carried a genetic mutation associated with hereditary ovarian cancer because Myriad had refused to enter into a contract with her insurance company. She was forced to wait 18 months before she was able to obtain the test through a grant, at which point she learned she does indeed carry a mutation that would not have been detected had she opted for Myriad?s standard and less expensive test. .
"I became a plaintiff in this case because I don't want other women to face the obstacles I did in obtaining personal genetic information in order to make life-and-death medical decisions,? Ceriani said. ?My genes are my own. No corporation should be allowed to deny me the right to look at a piece of my body."
The lawsuit was brought by researchers, genetic counselors, patients, breast cancer and women's health groups, and medical professional associations representing 150,000 geneticists, pathologists and laboratory professionals. Attorneys on the case include Hansen, Park, Aden Fine, Lenora Lapidus and Steven R. Shapiro of the ACLU; and Ravicher and Sabrina Hassan of PUBPAT.

LEWISTON, Maine ? The Jello-wrestling competition may have been a bit light on contestants, but it was definitely slimy on fun at this year?s Rock & Tattoo Expo.
In the end, there were no winners. There were, however, three friends cheered on by a crowd and covered from head to toe in orange Jello. Contestants shoved the slimy concoction at one another all the while trying to keep their balance in a plastic, blow-up baby pool.
?I guess we?ll just have to see what happens,? said Tina Handley, of Mexico, just minutes before getting in the ring with her friend Jennie Nisbet, of Rumford. ?The Jello?s pretty slippery, so I don?t expect to be standing much.?
The good-natured ? albeit gooey ? fun was all part of the three-day event held at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee featuring more than 40 tattoo artists from all across New England and as far away as California and Florida. Now in its third year, organizer Kris Howes ? tattoo artist and owner of INK! in Rumford ? said the event has nearly doubled each year.
In addition to tattoos and body piercings, the expo also featured a full slate of bands all day Saturday, as well as a freak show and art auction benefiting the family of Ken DeMars, of Carthage, who died suddenly at his home in July. Howes said this year?s event attracted about 1,000 people ? from the curious who came for their first tattoo or body piercing ? to those who wanted to add to their skin canvases.
?I think it?s become more accepted in the last five years,? said Howes? girlfriend, Michelle DuFault. ?It?s become more mainstreamed over the last few years.?
Nisbet said the Jello wrestling was a joke of DeMars who kept trying to talk organizers into having the event as part of the Expo. She said despite the low number of people who entered the event, the wrestling was fun and that was what the Tattoo Expo was all about.
April Pelletier, tattoo artist and co-owner of Artistic Creations in Auburn, said meeting tattoo artists from all over was one of the best parts of the event. This was her tattoo shop?s first time participating in the expo.
?Every artist here was phenomenal. The bands were amazing. And the people were just fantastic,? Pelletier said.
According to Pelletier, the event drew several new customers to the shop she owns with her husband and fellow tattoo artist, Eric, as well as many repeat customers to their business. Three new customers included sisters Joann Breen, of Skowhegan, and Michele and Beth Aldrich, both of Norridgewock, who came to the the Expo to all get the same tattoo.
Breen said all three got the word ?Sisters? permanently inked on their body with the infinity sign below it. While her sisters opted to have their tattoos placed on their feet, Breen got her tattoo on her wrist.
?We?re bonding. This is sister bonding,? said Breen with a laugh. ?I think if you get a tattoo, you should be proud of it. You shouldn?t get it just because.?

Samsing has started pushing out the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the international Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300).The update appears to be pushing out to Galaxy S3 owners with unbranded handsets in the Poland ("XEO" region) initially, with other regions and networks expected to follow shortly. At the time of writing, the update is being pushed out through Samsung's Kies software, rather than over the air.
As we reported last month, the update will introduce familiar Jelly Bean features like Google Now, "Project Butter" performance enhancements and the redesigned notification shade, in addition to new TouchWiz features. These include dormant mode, for better notification and alert management, as well as "easy mode" for simplified home screen operation.
Owners of the unlocked international Galaxy S3 should be getting their updates very soon, even if they're not in Poland -- usually when one region starts being updated, it's a matter of days before others follow. Carrier-branded versions, such as the U.S. Galaxy S3 models, may have a little longer to wait, as those devices must go through additional certification.
To see if your update is ready to go, start up Kies on your PC and plug in your phone. If you're already up and running with Jelly Bean on your S3, head into the comments and let us know how you're getting on.

In this Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 photo, Hamed Sinno, 24, lead singer and song writer of the Lebanese group ?Mashrou Leila," laughs during an interview with the Associated Press. Sinno is a rare openly gay role model in a deeply homophobic region, and says he hopes he can inspire Arab gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual fans "to forge for themselves a sense of belonging to the region, in spite of the incredible repression they have to live through." (AP Photo/Diaa Hadid)
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Hundreds of young Arabs joyfully screamed out obscenities, encouraged by the handsome, gay Lebanese lead singer at the concert in Jordan's capital. Police looked on worriedly. People outside asked what was going on.
It was a performance by the band Mashrou Leila, which uses a hybrid of velvety Lebanese slang and European instruments to address difficult, sometimes taboo issues of Middle Eastern societies. Lyrics of love and angst are intertwined with more difficult, sometimes taboo issues, with issues like poverty, premarital sex and homosexuality in this deeply homophobic region.
The success of the band, whose name is translated as "Night Project," appears to be another outgrowth of the Arab Spring uprisings that swept through the Mideast last year. Led by lead singer and song writer Hamed Sinno, a 24-year-old Freddy Mercury doppelganger and openly gay man, the band has been soundly embraced by Arab youth who see the music as part of a cultural and social revolution.
"They are about secularism, gay love, social problems that we don't talk about, that we don't accept, that we are afraid to discuss," said 19-year-old student Jalal Elias, of the northern Israeli city of Haifa, which has a large Arab-Palestinian population. "The kind of people who make this music ? they made the Arab Spring."
On a recent Friday, some 3,000 fans attended Mashrou Leila's concert in Amman's ancient Roman auditorium. Young men and women wore tight jeans, thick-framed glasses, and disheveled haircuts. Other women wore headscarves and modest Muslim dress.
They cheered as Sinno sung of a gay couple breaking up in a song called, "Smell the Jasmine."
"I wanted to be your housewife," Sinno crooned. "I wanted to raise your children."
The crowd happily screamed obscenities from the band's song "Gossip." Sinno later said in an interview with The Associated Press that Jordanian censors wouldn't him sing the lyrics "prostitute" and "pimp," so he let the fans sing it instead. They also sang along to "Dresses," of a couple broken apart by poverty and religious conflict. The song suggests the couple was having premarital sex ? another taboo issue.
Sinno said the band's music reflects the broader spirit of revolution. "I think the people that create music are the product of the same system that produces the revolutionaries we see changing the Arab world today," he said.
The band is one of many rock, hip hop and "electro-folk" groups connecting with a hazy Mideast demographic called "Arab Spring youth" ? educated, liberal, Muslims and Christians in their late teens and twenties.
Other musicians include folk rocker Youssra El-Hawary, the reggae inspired "Tout Ard," and rapper duo Oka-Ortega.
Many of the music groups existed before the Arab uprisings that began in January 2011 and toppled aging rulers in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and unleashed a civil war in Syria. But the artists have since grown in popularity ? partly because, according to Egyptian music producer Mohamed Gorab, edgier lyrics and Western-influenced music resonate in a revolutionary time.
"This is a new generation that's emerging," Gorab said in an interview. "They are feeling more freedom, and the music shows that."
With its commercial success, Mashrou Leila stands apart from the other bands. The group has performed in Cairo, Beirut, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and the Qataris capital Doha for audiences of around 3,000 people. In European music festivals, they play for non-Arabic speaking fans. Judging from Facebook and other social media, the band also has amassed a few dozen Israeli Jewish groupies.
Suggestive of their popularity, one music video has been shared on fan websites and amassed an estimated 250,000 hits. Mashrou Leila was even slated to open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Beirut this summer. But the Lebanese band canceled the gig after outrage from pro-Palestinian activists who were angry because the Red Hot Chili Peppers was also to perform in Israel.
Still, the band's successes are small compared to mainstream Arab pop stars who have millions of YouTube hits.
Stereotypical Arab pop divas dress lewdly, get plastic surgery to shrink their noses and swell their breasts, suggestively gyrate in luxurious settings, and are unusually pale in a region of olive-skinned people. Their muscular male counterparts frequently sport stubble and broody gazes.
Mashrou Leila began four years ago as a university jam band in the liberal Lebanese capital Beirut and adopted influences from Balkan melodies, American folk music, and mainstream pop. The six-member band of twentysomethings ? which includes one woman ? spread its music and swelled in popularity through friends, Facebook and YouTube. The group's fan base mostly appears to be young people who have been inspired by the Arab revolutions, as well as some of the social and cultural changes the uprisings produced.
But not all of the reforms achieved through the Arab Spring have been embraced by the young music enthusiasts. The revolutions also led to the election of Islamic governments and empowered ultraconservative Muslims called Salafis, dashing the hopes of some youths who sought liberal change.
Fan Jeries Ballan called Mashrou Leila "the real Arab Spring."
"What's the Arab Spring really about anyway?" said Ballan, 24. "It started out one way, and took a different direction."
A key indicator of the differences between Mashrou Leila's fans and older generations ? not to mention conservatives of any age ? is the attitudes toward Sinno's openly stated homosexuality.
At the Amman concert, Mashrou Leila fans said they didn't care. Gay fans said they saw Sinno as a role model.
"It's something we've come to accept," said concert-goer Lina Matar, 24, wearing a Muslim headscarf.
Sinno said he wanted the band's music to inspire Arab gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual fans "to forge for themselves a sense of belonging to the region, in spite of the incredible repressing they have to live through."
Outside the Roman amphitheater where the band performed, many Jordanians said they were offended by the Western-sounding music. An agitated elderly bearded man, flanked by a group of younger people, harassed the police and demanded to enter ? presumably to cause trouble. They left without going inside.
"Couldn't they protest against that film that insulted Islam? Isn't that more important than a concert?" grumbled day laborer Mohammed, 43. He was referring an amateurish anti-Islam video that Muslims say insults the Prophet Muhammad. The video sparked weeklong violence earlier this month that targeted U.S. and other Western embassies and left more than 30 dead in seven countries, including Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
But another woman standing outside the amphitheater said Mashrou Leila's lyrics seemed to reflect her life as working class black woman better than most Arab music.
"I like what I'm hearing," said Dima Hamoud, a 19-year-old of Sudanese descent.

Weigh up your options on whether to pay for Search Engine Optimisation or to do it yourself.
As mentioned in my previous article ?Search Engine Optimisation?- What you need to know? I mentioned the importance of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to drive traffic to your website. The more traffic you receive, the more you move up in Search Engine rankings and the more customers you will inevitably gain.
When most people think of Search Engine Optimisation, they think it only applies to the text on your page. However, you can also optimise your images and videos. You will see a growing number of websites using video content as more consumers are looking for ?hands-on? information more than boring old text.
DIY SEO
When looking at SEO for your website a great place to start is with Google?s ?Keyword Tool?, a free tool that helps you find the most searched for keywords for your niche that will bring traffic to your website. By using these keywords or phrases in your SEO strategy, you will be sure to have the content that a reader is looking for either in text, video or images. A combination of SEO on all three mediums is effective but don?t go too crazy and overuse all your content on one page (see previous article ?5 Tips for Search Engine Optimisation Beginners?).
You can try to do all the Search Engine Optimisation on your website yourself however doing this will be tedious and time consuming and you will likely not move up the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) very quickly. Unless you have the skills to do the basic set-up properly for your site including the basics like setting up Google Analytics and the Google Webmaster tools, site maps and doing malware and virus checks, you are best to consider using an SEO firm. Additionally, if you don?t have the time to stay up-to-date with what is happening in SEO, you are best to consider getting assistance with your SEO.
Using an SEO firm to carry out the SEO for your site takes the hassle out of the process and you can have more traffic coming to your site without lifting a finger. A good SEO firm will always carry out the basic ?must-haves? for solid SEO; assist you with your content?- specifically created for your site with your target customer in mind; and work with you to make sure your keywords are buyer targeted. They will also make certain to include both onsite and offsite optimisation. There are so many SEO firms out there and it is likely that you receive multiple emails from all over the world every week. So, when you are looking around for help with your SEO or working with an SEO firm, here are a few tips:
There is a lot to be said of Search Engine Optimisation and when done properly it can massively affect your business by driving targeted traffic to your website. After all, a website without traffic is like having a billboard in the desert.

Last month's rate was up from 4.9 percent in July and 4.7 percent in June. The rate was 6.3 percent in August 2011.
Even with the bump-up, economists say the monthly report was positive because the state saw gains in both its labor force and jobs.
"It's really not a bad report," said Lynn Gray, the OESC's chief economist.
Oklahoma's gain of 10,400 nonfarm jobs - growth of 0.7 percent - from July to August was tied for the largest percentage increase in the nation, according to the BLS. Hawaii and Missouri also posted 0.7 percent gains.
Compared to August 2011, the state's gain of 45,000 jobs - up 2.9 percent - was the second-highest percentage gain in the nation. It was preceded only by North Dakota's 6.7 percent gain, according to the BLS.
The results of a survey of businesses were a surprise, Gray said, noting that nonfarm job growth from month to month was higher than what the state has seen over the previous few months.
Employment gains were recorded in most industries, except for a few such as mining and manufacturing, which have been strong in recent months, Gray said. Mining lost 700 jobs over the month, while manufacturing was down 100 jobs.
Even a smaller household survey showed a 450-gain in total employment, which includes farm jobs and self-employed people.
The labor force, which includes people working and looking for work, also grew over the month by 3,220. Many of those re-entering the labor force have been unemployed for more than 12 months, Gray said.
The numbers indicate that people think their chances of gaining employment are better, Gray said.
Steve Agee, dean of Oklahoma City University's Meinders School of Business, echoed the view that the increase in labor-force participation is a positive sign.
"That means people are encouraged about the economy," he said. "They're re-entering the labor force, and they're looking for jobs, and they are getting hired.
"The rate of people entering the labor force is a little bit faster than the hiring, and thus the bump up in the unemployment rate. To me, it's still a positive sign for the Oklahoma economy."
Agee added, "I think that nationally, employers are still a little bit concerned about what's going to happen at the end of this year and the beginning of next year with this impending 'fiscal cliff' " in Washington.
"A lot of companies are sitting and waiting to see what happens, but in Oklahoma we continue to see growth. ... So we're still like this little island in a big storm, but it seems to be making good progress."
Nationwide, state unemployment rates were little changed during the month. Compared with August 2011, 42 states and the District of Columbia registered unemployment rate decreases, seven states had increases and one had no change.
Nevada continued to record the highest unemployment rate at 12.1 percent in August, while North Dakota again had the lowest at 3.0 percent.
