U.S. stocks mostly fell Wednesday on disappointing earnings and weak new home sales. The Standard & Poor's 500 extended its losses to a fourth day. The Dow Jones industrial average rose thanks mostly to higher earnings from two of its components, Boeing and Caterpillar.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 58.73 points, or 0.5 percent, to 12,676.05.
The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.42 points, or 0.03 percent, to 1,337.89.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 8.75 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,854.24.
For the week:
The Dow is down 146.52 points, or 1.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 24.77 points, or 1.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 71.06, or 2.4 percent
For the year:
The Dow is up 458.49 points, or 3.8 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 80.29 points, or 6.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 249.09 points, or 9.6 percent.
